Antananarivo - You will arrive in early morning at the very attractive and picturesque city of Antananarivo, capital of Madagascar. After completing customs, you will be met by our Cortez representative who will escort you to the Hotel Colbert to freshen up in our dayrooms. Late morning visit to the Tsimbazaza Zoo and Cultural Museum for an introduction to early Madagascar life as well as to the special birds, lemurs and botanical wonders endemic to the island. Dinner and overnight at the Hotel Colbert.
Day 2 / 3
Antananarivo / Perinet Reserve - Proceed by car to the reserve of Perinet in the eastern rain forest, with a brief stop at the La Mandraka Nature Farm. Overnight at the Vakona Forest Lodge and a full morning to visit the forest of the Analamazoatra Reserve (Perinet) to see the Indri indri and hear their haunting "singing" call. Afternoon departure for coastal town of Tamatave, dinner and overnight at Hotel Neptune.
Day 4 / 5
Tamatave / Maroantsetra - Morning visit to Parc Ivoloina, a unique animal rehabilitation center and zoo, before flight to Maroantsetra, gateway to the Masoala Peninsula great rain forest, mecca of naturalists and wildlife enthusiasts. Your visit to this pristine area includes an afternoon river trip through the private reserve of Androfita, and a full day trip to the tiny island of Mangabe. Nosy Mangabe is a natural reserve and sanctuary for the world's rarest lemur--the Aye Aye. Two night stay at the Relais du Masoala overlooking the Bay of Antongil.
Maroantsetra / Antananarivo - Morning visit to pleasant marketplace of Maroantsetra, known for straw hats and bags, as well as the colorful lamba cloth, before transfer to airport for flight to Tana. Check-in at the Hotel Colbert; dinner at the delightful Ville Vanille with local entertainment and overnight.
Day 7 / 8
Antananarivo / Diego Suarez - Leisurely breakfast before mid-morning flight to Diego, unique port on the Northern tip of the island. Diego sparks a conglomeration of architecture reflecting the myriad of influences through the centuries. City tour and visits to Montagne Francais and the lush flora of Montagne D'Ambre National Park are the highlights of this area of Madagascar. Meals and lodging at Kings Lodge.
Day 9 / 10
Diego Suarez / excursion Ankarana - Early morning departure for the Ankarana, noted for its bizarre limestone pinnacles known as the "Tsingy". Visit to the caves and hopefully catch a glimpse of the crown lemur in the forest, one night of camping, and continue on to Ankify for overnight stay at the Hotel Baobab.
Ambanja / Nosy Be / excursion Nosy Komba and Nosy Tanikely - Early morning arrival at the Ambanja docks where you will embark for Nosy Be. Sit back, relax and revel in the leisurely boat ride to Nosy Be where you will stop en route for excursions to the islands of Nosy Komba, where the black lemurs reign and to Nosy Tanikely for snorkeling and a barbeque lunch. Dinner and overnight at Hotel Vanille in Nosy Be.
Nosy Be / excursion Lokobe Reserve - Day excursion to the peninsula of Lokobe by pirogue, native paddle boat. Learn first hand from Jean-Robert and his guides about his village's prolific plants and wildlife. Return to the Hotel Vanila to freshen up before evening flight to Antananarivo. Overnight at Auberge du Cheval Blanc near the airport.
Day 13 / 14
Antananarivo / Ft. Dauphin / Berenty Reserve - Early breakfast and flight to Ft. Dauphin. Upon arrival in the old southern port town, continue for drive through the "spiny forest" past the Antanosy graves to Berenty. Here you can "frolic with the natives", lemurs of course, as they welcome your arrival: the Lemur Catta Maki, better known as the ring-tailed lemurs, are very friendly and seem pleased to pose for photographs. Be ready for surprise encounters with the beautiful sifaka lemur as they "dance" across the path. Other species include flying foxes, lizards, chameleons, the endangered radiated tortoise and dozens of species of rare birds. Meals and overnight at Gite d'Etape.
Berenty / Ft. Dauphin / Antananarivo - Morning departure to Ft. Dauphin with stop at the sisal plantation and local botanical gardens (time permitting) before return flight to the Antananarivo. After arrival in the capital, time for last minute shopping at the Canal artisans market, then relax and freshen up at the Colbert before farewell dinner with local entertainment at the delightful Ville Vanille.
