MADAGASCAR EXPLORER — THE ULTIMATE

One month (28 days) itinerary -- for the seasoned and adventuresome, for the curious explorer, for the conservationist. Monday departure from Antananarivo.

Day 1
Antananarivo - Your adventure begins with a morning at leisure at the charming Hotel Colbert in the capital city of Madagascar, affectionately known as "Tana". Afternoon visit Tsimbazaza Zoo and Botanical Gardens, dinner and overnight.

Day 2 / 3
Antananarivo / Maroantsetra - Morning flight to Maroantsetra, gateway to the Masoala Peninsula. Excursion with boat trip to tiny island of Nosy Mangabe, a natural reserve and sanctuary for the world's rarest lemur - the Aye Aye. Two nights at the Relais du Masoala, resort extraordinaire.

Day 4 / 5
Maroantsetra / Sambava
Morning flight to Sambava, regional center for the vanilla, cloves, and coffee. Afternoon excursion on Bemarivo River and daytrip to Marojejy Reserve, rich in its diversity of fauna and rare wildlife. Hotel Carrefour.

Day 6
Sambava / Tamatave
Mid-day flight to Tamatave (Toamasina), historic port of Madagascar. Afternoon visit to the colorful Baqar Be market, overnight Hotel Neptune.

Day 7 / 8
Tamatave / Perinet / Antananarivo
Early morning departure to Perinet Reserve, home of the Indri indri, largest of the lemurs. Two days to explore Perinet Reserve, lush in the flora and fauna of the eastern rain forest. Enjoy wonderful food and the forest setting of Vakona Lodge.

Day 9 / 10
Perinet / Antananarivo / Antsirabe
Motor to Tana and stop en route at Peyrieras Nature Farm at La Mandraka. Overnight Hotel Colbert before continuing on through the highlands to Antsirabe and Hotel des Thermes.

Day 11 / 12
Antsirabe / Ranomafana
Scenic if long drive with stop in Ambositra, home of the wood carvers. Arrive afternoon in Ranomafana National Park rain forest, overnight and full day in the park, home of the famous Golden Bamboo lemur.

Day 13 / 14
Ranomafana / Ranohira / Isalo
Drive through Horombe Plateau to Isalo National Park at Ranohira, renowned for its sandstone rock formations, rare endemic plants and wonderful bird sanctuary. Stay two nights at the unique Relais de la Reine.

Day 15 / 16
Ranohira / Beza Mahafaly / Tulear
All day drive to Beza Mahafaly Reserve through Sakaraha forest, noted for one of the best spiny forest around, camp overnight. Morning in the forest and afternoon drive to Tulear , crossing the Tropic of Capricorn. Hotel Capricorne

Day 17 / 18
Tulear / Fort Dauphin / Berenty
Morning visit to the shell market before mid-day flight to Fort Dauphin and drive to Berenty Reserve. Full day spent at Berenty, with time to befriend the ring-tailed Lemur Catta and see the sifaka, most beautiful of all lemurs. Lodging at Gite d'Etape at the edge of the forest.

Day 19 / 20
Fort Dauphin / Ifaty
Early morning flight - Transfer to Ifaty, and time to enjoy birdwarching in the spiny forest and R&R in beach bungalows at Lakana Vezo

Day 21 / 22 / 23
Ifaty / Morondava
Afternoon flight and excursion to Baobab Alley, so named after the rare and unusual upside-down Baobab tree. Visit to the "Swiss forest", home of many local endemic species. Stay at Les Bougainvilliers before return to "Tana" and the Hotel Colbert.

Day 24 / 25
Antananarivo / Diego Suarez
Early morning flight - afternoon excursion to Montagne d' Francais to catch a glimpse of the colorful port of Diego. Day excursion to Montagne d' Ambre and a chance to appreciate some of the most beautiful flora and fauna in Madagascar. Overnight at Kings Lodge overlooking the bay.

Day 26 / 27 / 28
Diego Suarez / Nosy Be
Short flight to the island of Nosy Be. Visit includes day trip to Nosy Komba island, natural reserve for macaco lemurs, snorkeling at Nosy Tanikely, and very worthwhile visit with Jean-Robert at Lokobe Reserve. Meals and overnight at the Hotel Vanila.

    Average price is $275 - $400 per day all inclusive.
    Based on number of passengers and escorted or not.
    Single supplement applies.
 
A quote will be provided at no obligation upon receipt of an Independent Itinerary Price Quote Request detailing number of passengers and applicable services (i.e., escort or no escort, additional nights, etc.)
 
Included:

  • lodging and meals for 28 days
  • intradomestic flights on Air Madagascar
  • airport transfers and taxes
  • services of English-speaking guide throughout
  • vehicle and driver as needed throughout
  • excursions, entrance fees and local guides in parks and reserves

Not Included:

  • gratuities (a small tip at time of service is customary)
  • beverages, alcoholic and non-alcoholic, including bottled water
  • personal items such as telephone, fax, laundry, etc.
  • all items not specified in the itinerary

Please note that order of itinerary may be rearranged subject to air schedule changes by Air Madagascar, and some hotels may have to be substituted with similarly priced hotels due to conditions beyond our control.
